Education is still a good thing but....

This morning I watched a segment of a news program on the cost of getting an education. Since 2000 the financial investment by the student/or parent has not kept up with inflation or salaries.  So the question was asked of a young lady who was now back living at home with her parents but working and trying to pay off her loans, was it worth it? She felt it was although it would postpone  future plans to buy a home, get married  or move out on her own. Any regrets she was asked. Yes, I would have gone to community college for the first 2 years and then moved to a four year university.  Another interviewee had dropped out of school after the first semester and started his own business and now is working on opening a second one. (Please note-he had no student loan)

The reporter went on to state that today you must have a college degree and something about it being an entry into middle class.  At this point I was getting a little emotional and may be misquoting this reporter. I don't understand why a text book which is possibly out of date at or shortly after the class has been taken, and cannot be sold for anything close to the original sales price, if at all, costs some times between $100-$300 dollars. I don't understand why the schools are charging students to enter but allow some instructors to remain in a classroom and do a poor job of teaching and the big one, why tuition is rising so fast.

Now maybe I am missing the big picture. So if you have an opinion, please share it, especially concerning the textbooks.
