We are going green!

Green is in.  When I goggled the phrase, I got 74,100,000 responses. For a number of years residential builders have upgraded their homes to include many energy saving factors.  Appliance manufacturers have marketed themselves on the energy saving features of their product. Now we are also seeing commercial building owners adopting new policies to promote sustainable practices and energy conversation. Realtors can take a course to become aware of earth friendly products, improvements, and environmentally friendly construction.

With all this attention on going green, I had to stop and think about what it means to me as an individual, to our country and to my business.   Don't get me wrong. I think going green is a good thing but how far do you go with it on an existing home? Will you decide not to buy a home because it doesn't have bamboo cabinetry, recycled-glass countertops, or other earth-friendly products?

What does green mean to you?

Hi Sanford & Seretha,

Happy to see someone else can see green is the future. As to your question on how far to go on an existing home it depends on many varibles. I would think number 1 is your budget. The main thing is when you make a change look at the green altenative. Normally you will find the payback is just a couple of years down the road.

One reason people go green is health concerns so it best to be sure the contractor is certified to do a green remodel.

Since I wrote my initial comment, I visited a residential community building homes with the infrastructure in place to utilize solar energy.  also in Houston, we have the first downtown office building to receive LEED certification.  Looks like green is picking up momentum.
